Wild Kenya: Ol Pejeta to the Mara

1. Day 1 Ol Pejeta

   Arrive Nairobi, drive to Ol Pejeta, game drive.

   Welcome to Kenya. Indian travellers need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, and India requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers returning from Kenya, so get vaccinated at least ten days before you fly. Our guide meets you at Nairobi airport and takes you for breakfast, then drives north about four hours to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, near the equator. Check in to your tented camp. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive and visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Overnight in Ol Pejeta.

2. Day 2 Lake Naivasha

   Rift Valley drive, boat ride with hippos.

   Start with an early game drive in Ol Pejeta, home to many black rhinos and the last two northern white rhinos in the world, guarded around the clock. Look out for lions, elephants and Grevy's zebras. After breakfast, drive south into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake about four hours away. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on the lake to see hippos up close and watch African fish eagles swoop for their catch. Overnight at Lake Naivasha.

3. Day 3 Masai Mara

   Drive to the Mara, afternoon game drive.

   After breakfast, drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve, about five to six hours on roads that become rough near the reserve. The Mara is Kenya's most famous wildlife area, an endless grassland dotted with acacia trees. Check in to your safari camp and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, set out on your first game drive in your private safari vehicle, looking for lions, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes. Dinner at the camp. Expect a bumpy, dusty ride near the reserve. Overnight in the Masai Mara.

4. Day 4 Masai Mara

   Full day of game drives with picnic lunch.

   A full day of game drives in the Masai Mara, with morning and afternoon drives and a picnic lunch in the bush. From July to October, the Great Migration brings over a million wildebeest and zebras, with dramatic crossings at the Mara River. The rest of the year, the Mara still offers excellent sightings of the Big Five. A sunrise hot air balloon safari and a visit to a Maasai village can be added at extra cost. Overnight in the Masai Mara.

5. Day 5 Nairobi

   Back to Nairobi, Giraffe Centre.

   After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi, about five to six hours. In the afternoon, visit the Giraffe Centre, where you can feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform, a favourite with children. Then enjoy lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, near the home of the author of Out of Africa. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening after your safari, perhaps with dinner at one of Nairobi's Indian restaurants. Nairobi traffic can be heavy in the evenings. Overnight in Nairobi.

6. Day 6 Nairobi

   Departure.

   After breakfast, check out of your hotel. If time allows before your flight, visit the Karen Blixen Museum or shop for Maasai beadwork, kikoys and Kenyan coffee and tea. Our driver transfers you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home. Please reach three hours before departure, and keep your yellow fever certificate handy for arrival in India. Keep your safari photos backed up before you fly. Your Kenya safari ends here, with memories of rhinos, lions and the endless plains of the Mara.
