Char Dham closes this month: how to plan your 2027 yatra
Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri close for winter in November 2026. Here is what happens next and how to get a good slot in 2027.
The 2026 Char Dham season is ending. Gangotri is expected to close on 10 November, Kedarnath on 11 November and Badrinath around 13 November, with Yamunotri closing in the same week.
When does the yatra reopen?
Dates follow the Hindu calendar. Gangotri and Yamunotri traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, usually late April or early May. Kedarnath's opening date is announced on Maha Shivratri, and Badrinath's on Basant Panchami.
How to get a good 2027 slot
- Register early: online yatra registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory
- Book helicopters the day sales open if you need them; seats go within hours
- Avoid the first two weeks if you want thinner crowds, and avoid peak monsoon from July to mid-August
- Travel with someone who knows the route: road conditions change daily in the hills
Can't wait until 2027?
Winter is a beautiful time for other sacred journeys: Kashi Vishwanath and Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, or Vaishno Devi, which stays open all year.
